7 Tips To Master Your Goals

My daughter turned 10 this past weekend, and to celebrate she had 17 friends round for a party.

That's 19 kids my wife and I were responsible for ensuring they went home as healthy as they arrived.

3 hours of fun and chaos.

So much chaos that I cannot be 100% confident that they all went home with the right parent.

What I can confirm 100% is that I still have 2 kids in my house

And I am 95% sure it was my original kids.

So I guess that's success.

Last week I spoke about the importance of goals and making them SMART.

I also said that this week I would give you some tips on how to track and review your goals.

So, this week that is exactly what we will do!

These 7 questions form a review I conduct on myself every 3 months.

First a disclaimer... It doesn't matter if it's every 3 months, 4 months, 6 months or year. It also doesn't matter if you are delayed in doing it.

Life is busy and hectic and the ideal times don't come along bang on your timeline. But I would encourage you to make a note somewhere to remind you to do this.

1. What were my main achievements in the last three months?

This can be anything and everything, nothing too small. I did my first VLOOKUP in Excel without any support. A lot of people I know can do them in their sleep. For me it was a big deal.

2. What challenges did I face?

Look through some of the difficulties you went through and how you overcame them, or what you need to do to overcome them. What would you do differently next time? What did you do well this time?

3. Where did I grow significantly or improve significantly?

These can be skills, behaviors or knowledge that you have gained.

4. What progress did I make on my goals this past 3 months?

Review the goals you set yourself and assess your progress.

Be completely honest with yourself.

The only failure is pretending.

5. What habits / routines have helped me the most? Do I need to change any others?

Habits and routines are a major part of our day. Good and bad. This question helps you gain insights into what is and is not working for you.

6. How well did I balance my personal and professional life?

You can score this out of 10. Over time this gives you a base to compare each review.

Go into greater depth than just a score though.

Reflect on what went well and what didn't and why you gave yourself that score.

7. What are my key goals for the next quarter? What do I need to be successful?

Back to your goals again. This keeps them in your mind. It could be a continuation of a current goal, a tweak of them, or new ones.

There you go!

Having this deep understanding will help you make meaningful goals.
