We all have moments where we are fed up, discouraged and generally not ‘feeling it’.
Whilst my aim is to help you find fulfillment the fact is you won't be happy every moment of every day.
You shouldn't aim to feel that way either.
It isn't sustainable.
Sometimes you need to get pissed off about something to drive change or greater action.
My aim is to help you feel more fulfilled than you currently do.
And, just as importantly, maybe even more so, to know how to work towards it if you are having a bad day.
Knowing if this is a temporary state of mind or a sign that you need to change is a challenge.
One I have struggled with in the past.
One I took way too long to diagnose and react to.
These 6 questions have helped me discover if I need a change or if it is just a temporary issue.
1. What about your career / job do you love?
Write down all the feelings and tasks you did / had during a time you really enjoyed your work.
Doesn't matter if this is from 5 years ago or 5 weeks ago.
The aim is to see what comes up for you and to remember what you did enjoy.
2. When did you last feel that?
How long ago did you have those feelings of enjoyment and passion for your work?
Was it recently or too long ago for your liking?
No right or wrong answers to any of this.
Just be honest and write down the real answer.
3. How do you feel right now?
Use the answers from question 1 and 2 and write down everything you are feeling today.
The first 2 questions focused on the past.
This brings us to the present.
Again no right or wrong answers.
If it was too long ago and that makes you feel sad then that's a sign.
Don't ignore it! We will explore it throughout these steps.
4. Where is the disconnect?
Now we start to explore what and where the problems may be.
Compare what you have written down in questions 1 and 3.
What disconnects are you seeing?
How are you feeling right now?
Anything you feel is a sign to explore further.
This question helps compare how you felt when you were working on what you found enjoyable, what that work was, to your present and current reality.
5. What can you do to change it?
Napoloeon Hill once said “there are 2 types of problems, ones we can control and ones we cannot”
What is in your control to either change or influence?
What support do you need?
Now you have a clearer idea of what is and is not working for you, and how you feel about it.
You now have a clear idea on what you can and cannot control, and where to spend your energy.
6. Do you want to change it?
Now you know where the problem is. The ultimate question is do you want to change it?
If the answer is no then that's cool.
You are in a good place and you are now more aware of that.
Congratulations!
If the answer is yes.
Then ask yourself
What next steps do I want to take?
The actions you want to take will be in the answer to these questions.
What you need to do is decide what steps to take and in what order.
HEY, I’M DAN…
I know how exhausting and overwhelming it can be to work full time in a job that doesn't fulfill you. Then to arrive home sad and mentally exhausted.
Your kids really excited because daddy is home! and they want to tell you all about their day and play with you.
But you are so beaten down that you just can't give them the same excitement, or your full attention. Your mind is full of doubts and fears.
As hard as it may feel right now, there is a path from where you are today to becoming the dad who arrives home feeling fulfilled instead of frustrated.
I know because I have been where you are, and I can show you the way.
As a dad, husband, full time employee and a certified coach, I have helped dads just like you to identify careers that allow them to wake up excited to make a difference, to arrive home ready for toys and tantrums, and to go to your kids sports games fully present and enjoying it.
